House Republican Pumps $1 Million Into Re-Election Bid Despite Growing GOP Calls to Drop Out

Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) is pouring $1 million into his re-election campaign as he continues to resist mounting pressure to abandon his House bid, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The outlet revealed that Miller, who is facing allegations of domestic abuse from his ex-wife and Sen. Bernie Moreno’s (R-OH) daughter, Emily Moreno, plans to loan his campaign $1 million in two separate $500,000 installments, a move that significantly bolsters his financial position as questions swirl over his political future.

“I am invested in this election in every way and I will invest the resources into my campaign to win,” Miller said in a statement to the Journal about his upcoming battle against Brook Park city councilman Brian Poindexter.

The Ohio Republican went on to dismiss concerns that the controversy surrounding him has made his race unwinnable, adding, “I am in this for the long haul,” and that he “know[s] there are some people that are concerned about my ability to win this race right now, but I don’t share that.”

The campaign investment comes as calls for Miller to step aside have intensified within his own party. Sen. Moreno said over the weekend that the congressman should leave office and “seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake.” On Thursday, Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) called for him to drop his re-election bid. Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) echoed those calls, describing Miller as a “degenerate sociopath.”

Similarly, Sens. Katie Britt (R-AL), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) have spoken out.

Miller’s ex-wife has said that during their marriage, Miller pointed a gun at her head, threw scalding hot water at her, pushed her into a wall, and fractured their two-year-old daughter’s collarbone. The congressman denies the accusations and has filed a defamation suit. On Tuesday, he announced that he plans to “file my own paperwork” to open a House Ethics investigation into himself.

While a Monday Axios report alleged that President Donald Trump called Miller to express worry about his re-election campaign, the president has publicly called him a “good person.”
