Joe Scarborough: ‘How Grotesque’ That Trump ‘Only Thinks America is Great When Trump is President’

Morning Joe viewers tuning in to get their day started with a bit of anti-Trump venom were not disappointed Monday morning when Joe Scarborough and Claire McCaskill went long on what they saw as former President Donald Trump’s anti-American tirade over the holiday weekend.

Trump posted several short-form videos on his Truth Social account last week that included much of the same political rhetoric he’s known for. Still, he also made clear that he believes the nation is in a horrible state just three years after he left office.

In one video message, he acknowledged that, in his esteem, the nation is going through a “difficult time’ but promised that one year from now, when he is ostensibly President-elect, things will magically be better. However, it’s not at all clear how that would work. This sort of performative grievance politics did not please Scarborough.

“Let’s just talk about how sick to say that America is a rotten nation for your president of the United States,” Scarborough opened. “American carnage. And then you become president of the United States. America has four of the most tumultuous years later, ad the second he leaves and is depleted by the American people, he goes back to saying that America sucks again.”

“Like how grotesque the comment and how grotesque that Donald Trump only thinks America’s great when Donald Trump’s president?” Scarborough asked.

McCaskill, a former Democratic US Senator, replied:

He cares about himself. He has no guiding philosophy. He has no ideology. He has no policies he really believes in other than the guy. The only thing he believes in is the guy he sees in the mirror that he looks at probably more often than is ever healthy for any human being. And his marketing is all about grievance. He is a marketer. He’s a huckster. He is somebody who knows how to market things, not make them, not build them, just market them. And he is marketed always just to grievance 70 unity, never to aspirational hope that we all want America to have never tried in America, just grievance. So if you’re thinking on Thanksgiving, you should thank America for being having values and you should thank people and hope they come together. All he wanted to do on Thanksgiving was make sure everyone knew that he was still really pissed off about everything and he wants to make sure they stay pissed off about everything.

Scarborough and McCaskill then commiserated on what they see as Trump’s cognitive decline in the context of President Joe Biden’s age, with the Morning Joe host finally suggesting that Trump should be put to pasture in a “community living” center of some sort.
