The Supreme Court has dealt President Donald Trump another loss in his quest to throw out a 2023 verdict that found the president sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and then defamed her.
Trump’s lawyers had asked the High Court to withdraw their original refusal to hear his appeal, and it was rejected on Monday, the Associated Press reported.
The Supreme Court first declined to hear Trump’s appeal seeking to overturn the $5 million civil verdict in June.
After the ruling came down, Trump ranted on Truth Social: “This Case is really against the United States of America, and all it stands for, and should never be allowed to happen to another President, or Candidate to be! New York State created a Law, for an instant speck of time, going back many decades, in order to wrongfully “nab” me. It was tailormade, and this Injustice cannot be allowed to stand!”
Separately, the president is still on the hook for the $83.3 million defamation verdict after Trump attacked Carroll repeatedly, including on social media, after she accused him of the assault.
Carroll’s lawyers asked the jury to impose “a large award” to silence him.
In 2023, Trump was found liable for sexually assaulting Carroll in the dressing room of New York department store Bergdorf Goodman back in 1996.
Trump has spent years denying the allegations, claiming he and Carroll have never met — despite a photo that shows them speaking at a party.
This is a developing story and has been updated.
