Teamsters Decline to Endorse Harris Or Trump As Member Poll Shows Majority Backs Trump
The Teamsters Union refused to endorse Kamala Harris or Donald Trump after a new poll shows a majority of members back the former president.
According to survey data collected and released by the union on Wednesday, close to 60% of members who participated in the electronic poll support Trump, while 34% back the vice president. Moreover, another survey which was conducted via phone found Trump leading Harris again with union members by 58% to 31%.
Historically, the union has endorsed Democratic presidential candidates every November election cycle, including President Joe Biden in 2020. However, after data showed that members supported Trump over Harris by nearly two-to-one, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien issued a statement regarding the organization’s neutrality in the upcoming race.
“The Teamsters thank all candidates for meeting with members face-to-face during our unprecedented roundtables. Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business,” O’Brien said in a statement.
“Democrats, Republicans, and Independents proudly call our union home, and we have a duty to represent and respect every one of them. We strongly encourage all our members to vote in the upcoming election, and to remain engaged in the political process,” he continued. “But this year, no candidate for President has earned the endorsement of the Teamsters’ International Union.”
