‘Oh, F*ck Off!’ Democrats Rage at ‘Pathetic’ Shutdown ‘Betrayal’ in Mass Backlash

Eight members of the Democratic caucus, who backed a late-night deal aimed at reopening the government and ending the 40-day shutdown, have ignited backlash from inside their own coalition, with critics slamming the move as a “pathetic” surrender.

The shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, had been framed by Democrats as a last stand over healthcare. They claimed they were holding out to force the extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies that lapse at the end of the year. Instead, the agreement clinched last night punts the entire issue to a separate vote next month, which many believe will fail.

The reaction from top Democrats across the country was fury.

California Governor Gavin Newsom summed up his disgust in a one-word tweet:

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker echoed him: “This is not a deal — it’s an empty promise”:

Progressives in Congress have now widened their fire, not only at Republicans, but at their own leaders. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) even called for Senate Democrats to replace Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
