Police Body Cam Footage Shows State Senator and Ex-TV Meteorologist Allegedly Burglarizing Home

Police body cam footage of Minnesota State Senator and former TV meteorologist Nicole Mitchell allegedly burglarizing a home was played in court this week.

In the footage from April 22, 2024, police officers could be seen entering the home of Mitchell’s stepmother, Carol Mitchell, before apprehending the state senator in the basement, who was dressed in all-black and reportedly carrying a flashlight. Police officers also reportedly found a crowbar and a backpack containing two laptops at the scene.

“Somebody’s broken into my house,” Mitchell’s stepmother said in a 911 call at the time, informing officers the intruder was now hiding in her basement.

After Mitchell was placed under arrest, she called out to her stepmother, “It’s Nicole. I was just trying to get some of my dad’s things because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.”

Asked by a police officer how she knew the intruder, Carol Mitchell replied, “She’s my stepdaughter. She’s also a Minnesota senator.”

Mitchell was charged with felony first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.

In court on Tuesday, Mitchell’s defense attorney argued that his client had been concerned over her stepmother’s declining health and had been trying to gain custody of some of her late father’s possessions.

“Losing a parent is always hard. For Nicole, her father Rod’s death seemed to come too early, and it also came at a time when Carol was in decline,” said the attorney. “By the time Nicole drove to Carol’s in April of 2024, Nicole’s dad had been dead for more than a year. A year of Carol throwing out, giving away, and donating Rod’s things. For all Nicole knew, there may not have been any of Rod’s personal belongings even left in the house. Nicole knew that Carol was declining and eventually Carol wouldn’t be able to take care of herself.”

The prosecution, meanwhile, cited Mitchell’s confession to police officers that she knew she “did something bad,” and said her stepmother no longer felt safe in her own home.

“The evidence will show that this was not the defendant’s home, the defendant was not invited to the residence that morning, that she entered through a basement egress window by prying it open with a crowbar at 4:45 in the morning,” said the prosecution. “The evidence will show the defendant was dressed in all-black, including wearing a black stocking hat.”
