‘There Is NO Evidence!’ NewsNation Anchor Hammers Trump Spox in Brawl Over Wrongly-Deported Man
NewsNation anchor Hena Doba hammered Trump White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields over assertions that wrongly deported Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “gang member” in a heated exchange, repeatedly telling Fields “There is no evidence!”
News broke Monday night that Victor Martinez-Hernandez — who entered the U.S. unlawfully from El Salvador — was found guilty of rape, kidnapping, and the first-degree murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin. The Trump administration has seized on the case as a counterpoint to the wrongful deportation of Garcia, whom Trump labeled a “terrorist” on national television without providing evidence.
Doba filled in for Elizabeth Vargas on Monday night’s edition of NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, during which Fields relentlessly repeated the allegation that Garcia was a gang member.
But Doba was unyielding, slugging it out with Fields until she felt moved to simply move on:
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: The reality is, this wasn’t a Maryland father, this was a El Salvadorian man who was illegally in this country, who was affiliated with MS-13. Let’s set the record straight –.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: There is no–.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: –about who this person is.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: There is no evidence that he was a gang member.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: With all due respect, if you, if, if–
The Department of Justice has come out and said that he has gang affiliations, just like the same man who killed Rachel Morin had gang affiliation. So you would have told me before Rachel Morin’s death, you would’ve defended that man and said he had no gang affiliates, and he went on to kill Rachel Morin.
So instead of defending this gentleman… Talk about who he actually is, and talk about the risk in keeping illegal criminals in this country. This is exactly what President Trump was elected to do, to return these people back to their home countries, and that’s what he did.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: We’re not defending him. I’m gonna reiterate, that is unsubstantiated! There is no evidence of him being a gang member!
He was married to, he is married to a U.S. Citizen, and he was in this country legally.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: There’s a lot of married gang members.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: Okay, but we don’t know if he was actually–.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: Being married does not make you not a gang members.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: There’s no evidence! We’re gonna move on. There’s not evidence that he was a gang number, and I wanna reiterate that to our viewers.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: The Department of Justice came out and said there is credible evidence that he was a member or affiliated with the MS-13, that is a fact.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: You said he’s a gang member and he wasn’t legally allowed to be here, which, again, he was legally allowed to be here. And he is married to an American citizen.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: You can hold court for him all you want, he is no longer in this country, one person, the Americans are safer because of it.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: And to go back to the original question, so right now the White House seems to be doing nothing about getting him back, and that’s fine, I’m going to move on.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: He’s an illegal immigrant! He was here illegally with deportation orders in 2019. What part of that do you not understand?
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: I understand the story very well, and I’m going to stop going back and forth with you on this, but I will say, again, he had every right to be in this country. Is there any scenario under which this guy …
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: He did not! He was an illegal immigrant!
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: We’re gonna move on on this.
TRUMP SPECIAL ASSISTANT HARRISON FIELDS: Are you serious? No, I will not let you go forward. He was a illegal alien in this country with a deportation order in 2019. He is an El Salvadorian citizen. If you are not a citizen of the United States of America, here illegally, there are grounds to deport you, and which happened recently.
NEWSNATION ANCHOR HENA DOBA: I– again substantiated, those are NOT the facts, but I will move on.
