President Donald Trump accused Democrats of opposing his voter ID and citizenship requirements because they “want to CHEAT,” escalating his campaign for sweeping new federal election rules ahead of the midterms.

Trump seized on Democratic opposition to the SAVE America Act in a Truth Social post Wednesday, arguing their votes against the legislation exposed their motives:

Every Dumocrat voted, “NO,” to THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!” Trump wrote.

“1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PHOTO I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!) – Meaning they want to CHEAT!
2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP – Meaning they want Criminal Illegal Aliens to VOTE!

The SAVE America Act, which passed the Republican-controlled House earlier this year, would establish a nationwide photo identification requirement for federal elections. It would also require states to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

The legislation has run into unified Democratic resistance in the Senate, where Republicans lack the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster.

Earlier this month, Democrats also blocked a narrower proposal from Senator Jon Husted (R-OH) that focused specifically on requiring photo identification at the polls. That measure fell short in a 52-46 vote.

Democrats have argued the broader SAVE America Act would impose new barriers on eligible American voters who lack ready access to documents such as passports or birth certificates.

Trump has nevertheless repeatedly pressed Senate Republicans to get the legislation through Congress, previously demanding they remain in Washington through the August recess to pass it and in July urged them to eliminate the filibuster if necessary.
