Trump Jokes About Giving Out Lindsey Graham’s Phone Number During Savage GOP Primary

While speaking at Tuesday’s memorial for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), President Donald Trump recalled a testy moment during the 2015 presidential primary when he gave out Graham’s personal phone number.

The story, which sparked outcry at the time, was met with laughs.

“He was a force of nature, and I will miss him greatly. As you remember, Lindsey and I did not exactly get off to the best of starts running against each other,” Trump said.

“Back in 2016, Lindsey said something rather nasty on his fight to becoming the next President of the United States. So, naturally, I did something that I shouldn’t have done. I shared his personal cell phone number with the millions of people that happened to be watching that particular day. As I made a speech, a very important speech, I remember the number (202) 228-0292. If anybody wants to give it a shot.”

“His phone exploded. He said, I had that number for 20 years. His phone totally, I don’t know what he did with it, but it exploded,” Trump added. “That was the beginning of a friendship in a way.”

Graham called Trump a “jackass” back in 2015, which prompted the latter to give out Graham’s number while speaking in South Carolina. “[Graham] said, ‘Can you mention my name?’ I say, ‘Yes, I will.’ And he gave me his number,” Trump said at the time. “And I found the card. I wrote the number down. I don’t know if it’s the right number. Let’s try it.”

A representative confirmed to ABC News the number belonged to Graham at the time.

“I don’t know — it’s three or four years ago — maybe it’s an old number,” Trump also said. “Your local politician: He won’t fix anything, but he’ll still talk to you.”

Graham later tweeted, “Probably getting a new phone. iPhone or Android?”
