Former Secretary Of State Warren Christopher Has Died
Warren Christopher, the United States Secretary of State during President Bill Clinton‘s first term, died last night in Los Angeles at the age of 85. Christopher had been battling bladder and kidney cancer for some time.
Christopher is remembered for his role as the chief negotiator working for the release of American hostages in Iran back in 1981. He racked up further experience dealing with tense situations as he worked to investigate the factors at play in several riots bringing Detroit and the Watts section of Los Angeles to their knees, as well as in the Los Angeles riots unfolding in the wake of Rodney King‘s beating.
Christopher was also an instrumental figure in supervising a recount of those now infamous “Hanging Chads” in Florida during the 2000 election.
He was a senior partner at the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers.
Christopher leaves behind his wife, four children and five grandchildren.
