Father of Colombian Soccer Star Luis Diaz Watches His Son Play the Game of His Life Days After Being Freed from Captivity
A week ago, Luis Manuel Diaz was being held captive by the Colombian rebel group National Liberation Army.
On Thursday, he watched his son Luis Diaz become their country’s hero when he scored two late-game goals to defeat Brazil in a World Cup qualifier.
Colombia took on Brazil in Barranquilla’s Estadio Metropolitano. The home country trailed 1-0 throughout most of the match due to a 4th-minute goal by Gabriel Martinelli, but Diaz provided the equalizer with a header in the 75th minute.
Amid all the chaos of the home crowd cheering for the massive goal, Diaz’s father was shown on the broadcast crying tears of joy with friends and family.
Thanks to the 26-year-old, that wouldn’t be the end of the euphoric moment. Just four minutes later, Diaz once again launched a header to the back of Brazil’s net to take the lead.
His father was inconsolable.

After the match, Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker even approached Diaz to give him a lengthy hug. The two are teammates on Liverpool F.C., and Becker made it a point to congratulate Diaz and his family despite conceding two late goals to him.
