New York Radio Host Goes OFF on Yankees Front Office for ‘Miserable’ Trade Deadline Moves

WFAN host Chris McMonigle went off on the New York Yankees on Tuesday morning in response to the team’s moves at the MLB trade deadline.

At the time of this writing, the Yankees were 63-50 and trailed the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East by 3.5 games. Ahead of Monday’s deadline, the team made trades to acquire infielder Luis Garcia Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos from the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants, respectively.

Those moves, McMonigle noted, failed to address the team’s biggest concerns. He called the efforts by the Yankees front office — and general manager Brian Cashman, specifically — a “disgrace.”

“It’s a disgrace,” McMonigle said. “It’s a miserable trade deadline. It’s a failure of a deadline. There’s no doubt about it. That’s the only way to look at it. They are gonna continue to throw out the worst catching situation in all of the sport, and they’re doing it willingly. Bottom line, they are willingly playing the worst catcher in all of baseball. The New York Yankees will continue to roll out — I’m not gonna kill them for rolling into the season. I think we all expected [catcher Austin Wells] to be better. Not an All-Star, but better than this.

“They are now willingly, after the trade deadline, rolling out the worst position in all of sports, arguably. The catcher position for the New York Yankees is the worst position player group in all of Major League Baseball — the New York Yankees. They also are rolling out arguably one of the worst shortstop positions in the game, and third base ain’t much better. And now they are willingly doing so — willingly. It’s unacceptable, it’s a miserable deadline, and Brian Cashman has failed.”

So far this season, Wells is hitting just .167 with nine home runs and 16 RBI in more than 254 plate appearances. In his first four seasons with the team, the 27-year-old has yet to hit above .230.
