Trump Pelted With Second Round of Boos As He Presented World Cup Medals

President Donald Trump was hit with some pretty loud boos for the second time in a matter of hours on Sunday when he walked onto the field to present World Cup medals, following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the championship game.

The Fox broadcast picked up the jeers as Trump sauntered onto the MetLife Stadium field in New Jersey.

Trump was flanked by his his pal FIFA boss Gianni Infantino as he waved to the crowd and clapped his hands; the president appeared to smirk at first, but he looked a bit more serious as he stepped onto the blue platform to give out the awards.

The cold reception came after Trump appeared to get booed by a healthy chunk of the crowd when he was shown on the big screen following the National Anthem.

Trump then started draping medals on the refs and the players from Spain and Argentina, including Argentine legend Lionel Messi.

Trump told Fox Sports before the match he would love to switch places with the soccer star “for about a month or so” because Messi has a “much easier” life. The president also opted against predicting who would win, but said it was hard to bet against Messi.

But Argentina ended up losing after Spain’s Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal during the second half of overtime. Messi looked like he’d taken a sledge hammer to the gut after Spain went ahead, and he still looked rattled when Trump shook his hand and awarded his medal.

Sunday’s final closes what was an eventful World Cup for Trump. The president famously lobbied Infantino to overturn a controversial red card on USA striker Folarin Balogun earlier this month. FIFA canceled the red card, but it ultimately didn’t matter — the U.S. got smoked 4-1 by Belgium in the next game.

Still, Trump applauded Infantino for the “great decision” during an event on Friday. Trump also declared the U.S. had officially become a “soccer country” during the tournament.
