American gymnast Simone Biles put the finishing touches on Team USA’s gold medal performance Tuesday in the women’s gymnastics team final at the Olympics.
Teammate Jordan Chiles took the floor prior to Biles, and a strong routine helped the Americans distance themselves from the rest of the field. Although Biles only needed around a score of around 8 to claim the gold — routines are scored on a combined 20-point scale for difficult and execution — the 27-year-old still had a strong showing with a score of 14.666.

The team’s immediate reaction made it clear they knew Biles had done enough, but they still waited anxiously as the judges scored the routine. Finally, after several tense minutes of anticipation, the score was announced in the venue and the gymnasts began the celebration.

Prior to the team’s arrival in Paris, Biles described their quest for gold as a “redemption tour.” They won the silver at the 2021 games in Tokyo after back-to-back golds in 2012 and 2016. Now, Biles — an eight-time medalist — is the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history.
