ABC’s World News Tonight, the network’s flagship evening newscast helmed by David Muir, finished the 2017-2018 as the number 1 show in total viewers — beating NBC’s Nightly News with Lester Holt by the largest margin in 22 years.
World News Tonight, averaging 8.63 million viewers, stormed to its second year as the first place evening newscast. Per ABC News, that average is the newscast’s largest average audience since 2004-2005.
NBC’s Nightly News, meanwhile, trailed behind by more than half a million in total viewers, with an average of 8.15 million. Holt edged out ABC News in the advertiser coveted 25-54 demo, however, taking home 1.85 million to Muir’s 1.77 million. That marks NBC News’s 22nd consecutive season winning the coveted demo.
CBS’s Evening News with Jeff Glor finished the season in third, with 6.20 million in total viewers and 1.28 million in the demo.
Whereas CBS and NBC saw drops in their viewerships since last year, ABC saw a growth of 4 percent in total viewers and an uptick of 1 percent in the demo.
