Bakari Sellers Rips Democratic Leaders for Failing to Answer One Question Voters Care About

Former Democratic congressman Bakari Sellers trashed his own party leaders for failing to answer one key question for voters, warning people “don’t give a damn” about anti-Trump opposition as much as what the party will “tangibly” do for Americans if they take the “reins of power.”

The comments came on Thursday’s CNN NewsNight as the panel discussed new polling by the network that showed President Donald Trump’s standing with voters continuing to slide.

The CNN/SSRS poll published earlier that day found the president’s approval rating at 34%, matching the lowest level of either term in office. Half of respondents said they strongly disapprove of his performance, while a record-low 15% said they strongly approve

The survey also found a record 73% of Americans said the president has not paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems, while just 27% said he has focused on the right priorities.

Nearly three-quarters also said Trump is out of touch with the problems ordinary Americans face in their daily lives.

The panel turned to whether Democrats could capitalize on that to win big in November’s midterm elections.

“Don’t ever get optimistic about Democrats; we are notorious about ripping defeat out of the jaws of victory,” Sellers said while laughing at the stats.

Pointing to Trump’s approval rating nosedive, he continued: “Look, there are a couple of things that you hit the nail on the head about. Like, the first is Donald Trump is notoriously weak across the board. The economy hasn’t gotten any better; there’s some notorious blunders you can point at like Iran. People don’t know why we’re still there. Today, we just saw the expansion of the war in Egypt. You see these headlines every single day. We’re talking about anti-weaponization. We’re talking about infighting.”

“But at the end of the day, my criticism to my own party is that we have not developed a clear enough message answering one question, which is what are you going to do tangibly for the American people if we give you the reins of power?” he pivoted.

Namedropping the House Minority Leader, he added: “I have not heard Hakeem Jeffries answer that question, and it drives me nuts.”

“We can no longer simply say that we are not the party of Donald Trump. Because you know why people apparently don’t give a damn, right? They just don’t care,” Sellers said. “They want to make sure that they can afford their groceries and utility bills.”
