Chris Cuomo Declares Trump Has Taken the Country to ‘Crazy Town’ With His ‘Bernie Bros’-Sounding Administration
Chris Cuomo accused President Donald Trump’s administration of giving off “Bernie bros” vibes with their defenses of tariffs amid stock market struggles.
On NewsNation’s CUOMO on Monday, Cuomo accused Trump administration officials of sounding like loyal followers of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) as they have touted tariffs as a way to bolster American workers and the U.S. manufacturing industry.
“I don’t care what team you’re silly enough to support. That’s where we all are. Crazy town,” Cuomo said about Trump’s economic strategy. “What is that? No clear path, no messaging, just madness and making it up as you go. That’s crazy town. How else to describe our reality? We’re now told that tariffs are part of an intricate strategy with many phases. The president just never bothered to explain it until after he did it. And the markets tanked.”
Cuomo argued that Trump is now “singing the tune” Sanders and others have for years against a system that creates “billionaires and broke people” as the American worker has been “left behind.”
On the chaos hitting the stock market amid uncertainty surrounding Trump’s tariffs, Cuomo knocked the “messaging” of administration officials, noting that a comment from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent being misread led to a swing in the market. Outlets falsely reported Bessent saying there was the possibility of a 90-day freeze on tariffs. What Bessent said was that the decision would ultimately be up to the president.
“First of all, Trump administration, you can’t just go out on Fox,” Cuomo said. “Most serious people don’t watch it. You have to put your people out on all the different platforms when you want a message, especially if it’s not gonna be top down from the president. So, as soon as the market went up on this news, it came crashing back down. This misinformation, and that’s what it was, created a $4 trillion swing in the market.”
He added that Trump officials sound an awful lot like “Bernie bros” these days as they tout tariffs as a way to kick off a boom in manufacturing in the U.S.
Cuomo argued:
His guys sound like the Bernie bros. It’s all about the working man all of a sudden and correcting how top-heavy all these corporations are. And if the markets go down while Trump gets other countries to take care of our working men and women, screw them. They’ve been at the trough long enough. Hey, amen, I smell what you’re cooking. CEOs are now making 345 times the worker. In 1965, they made 20 times more. Why has that exponentially exploded where wages have not? So I’m fine with the message. I think it’s grossly unfair that corporations get to distribute profits while their workers are subsidized by taxpayers. Billionaires shouldn’t be growing more than everything else. But what’s the problem? Well, until now, that message isn’t new. It just wasn’t coming from Trump.
He then played a clip of Sanders on the Senate floor railing against the pay disparities between CEOs and their employees, as well as a clip of Trump claiming Sanders wants a 90% tax on Americans. Trump dismissed Sanders as a “socialist/communist.”
Cuomo argued Trump’s tariffs are about “optics,” before going on to reference the graph listing out the various tariffs that Trump showed off in his press conference announcing them.
“He didn’t even know that graph until he read it at that press conference,” Cuomo said. “What likely happened here is Trump was pushing tariffs because he believes in the optics, no matter the economics. They make him look strong. He is fighting back.”
