CNN Accidentally Gifts MAGA a New Favorite Nickname for Trump
CNN’s Abby Phillip accidentally handed MAGA a nickname for President Donald Trump that they are fully embracing after she covered his crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C.
During Monday’s NewsNight, Phillip opened a segment on Trump’s announcement that he is deploying National Guard troops to D.C. by mocking him for declaring himself “crimefighter in chief” and “Batman.”
“Donald Trump makes himself Batman and the nation’s capital is Gotham City,” the CNN anchor said, referring to the DC comics superhero. “The President of the United States has declared himself crime-fighter-in-chief, and he’s taking over Washington’s police force.”
The president declared a “public safety emergency” in D.C. this week after calling it one of the most “dangerous” places in the world.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “unsettling,” noting that police statistics show that crime, including violent crime, has gone down this year.
According to MPD data, violent crime is down 26% this year. Supporters of Trump’s actions have argued that the statistics do not paint the reality of some D.C. residents. According to MPD’s data, there have been 100 homicides thus far this year.
Phillip claiming Trump made himself “Batman” may have been meant to question the president’s actions, but MAGA supporters raced to social media to celebrate the comparison.
“That makes President Trump sound SUPER COOL!” conservative pundit Steve Guest wrote on X. “Don’t think that was Abby’s intention at all.”
The conservative satire site Babylon Bee posted a meme of the president as The Dark Knight.
Trump supporters, including Guest, also shared a 2015 clip of Trump declaring, “I am Batman” after a kid asked him if he was the superhero during a helicopter ride.
