Dan Crenshaw Roasts His Party Over Speaker Fight: It’s Popular In ‘Conservative World’ to ‘Go Against Your Own People’

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) claimed that Republicans often go against their own people while discussing the potential GOP battle over the House speakership.

Following the narrow passage of the recent spending budget to keep the government opening, some media pundits have floated the potential of a rebellion by disgruntled Republicans under the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

During a Saturday interview on Fox News, anchor David Asman asked Crenshaw whether he believes Johnson could face a vote to vacate. Crenshaw noted that President-elect Donald Trump will have major influence over whether Johnson will continue leading the House.

ASMAN: What is clear, Dan, is that is that the president elect has enormous power right now. He has his the Gallup poll shows that he’s in a much better position right now in terms of public opinion than he was on January 20th, 2017 when he when he first took over. He’s got over 51% approval right now. So he has increased his approval rating since the election. So his his finger on the scale will make all the difference, won’t it?

CRENSHAW: Yeah, I think so. Look, if he if he says don’t vote for Johnson, then I think it’s going to be a very tough speaker race for Johnson. Again, it’s really not clear who else would be in the waiting there. We remember we went through this. Yeah. And all their major players basically had their heads chopped off. So it’s not obvious to me that Johnson’s done a bad job. It’s it’s obvious to me that he’s done the best job he can given the circumstances. And he keeps a level head. I think he doesn’t lose his goal in the way I would, given what people say about him and what people say, Well, lies, people tell and the games that people play. A lot of this is gamesmanship. People want to hold their vote because they want something, some kind of personal concession from the speaker. I think it’s pretty gross to do that. But this is what they do. And it’s unfortunately, you have to understand, too, it’s very popular in the conservative world to not just go against Democrats, but mostly to go against your own people. That’s the more popular soundbite. Unfortunately, that’s that’s a cultural problem that we have.
