Elon Musk Claims X Outage Was Result of Cyberattack from ‘The Ukraine Area’
Elon Musk claimed during an interview with Fox Business Network host Larry Kudlow on Monday that his social media platform X was taken offline by people “in the Ukraine area.”
The platform experienced multiple outages beginning before 5 a.m. ET on Monday. Some problems persisted until the afternoon when Musk said X was under attack.
He posted, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …”
Musk later joined Kudlow, and the two discussed a number of topics, including an apparent DDoS attack to shut X down. Musk claimed bad actors in or near Ukraine were responsible:
KUDLOW: I want to begin with, among other things, everyone’s attacking you for your position, what are you doing in the government – there was a cyber attack on X today which shut it down and may have been foreign sourced. It’s a big story. You want to give us a moment on that?
MUSK: Well, we don’t – we’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.
KUDLOW: Well, so that’s your suspicion. Is the website, is the internet up? Is it up yet?
MUSK: It’s up. Yeah.
KUDLOW: It’s up. Okay, good.
Musk was initially supportive of Ukraine as it waged a defensive war against Russia beginning in February 2022. In recent months, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has attacked the country’s leaders and Americans who support them.
Earlier on Monday, Musk called Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) a “traitor” for urging Americans to continue to support the country.
Kelly wrote, “Just left Ukraine. What I saw proved to me we can’t give up on the Ukrainian people. Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement has to protect Ukraine’s security and can’t be a giveaway to Putin. Let me tell you about my trip and why it’s important we stand with Ukraine.”
Musk replied, “You are a traitor.”
