‘Highly Unusual’: CNN Panel Sounds Alarm On Trump Asking Clarence Thomas to Swear In His Cabinet Members
Dana Bash and a CNN panel raised red flags on Wednesday over Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas being so frequently used to swear in President Donald Trump’s cabinet members.
“Please raise your right hand again and again and again. That’s what we heard from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who’s emerging as the go-to Justice to swear in Donald Trump’s cabinet, overseeing ceremonies at the Supreme Court, at the White House, even at his own home,” Bash reported, noting Thomas has overseen five swearing-in ceremonies thus far, including one at his own home.
Thomas is widely known as one of the most pro-Trump judges on the Supreme Court, and his wife has made waves as a right-wing activist, grabbing headlines for her support in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Bash, who noted she can’t ever remember a Supreme Court Justice at one of these swearing-in ceremonies, argued there is nothing wrong with Thomas’s role, but she is concerned about what it “symbolizes.”
CNN chief Supreme Court Justice analyst Joan Biskupic said Thomas’s role is untraditional, though she noted Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh also swore in two nominees.
“It’s traditionally been done by the vice president of the United States,” she said, going on to accuse Thomas’s wife, Ginni Thomas, of wanting access and influence in the Trump administration. Biskupic noted that Trump himself “had specifically asked” for Justice Thomas to condcut several of the ceremonies.
Biskupic reported:
During the first administration, she was regularly in contact with top White House officials. And then we know in 2020, when Donald Trump lost that election to Joe Biden, she was somebody imploring Mark Meadows, then the chief of staff, to keep fighting, keep fighting, keep fighting.
And the January 6 committee found all sorts of emails that she had sent. So that can give you a context of these these two especially, you know, Justice Thomas has been, of all the nine justices, the one most willing to sort of interact with the Trump administration. Now, I should add that Brett Kavanaugh also swore in two Cabinet officials.”
