‘Ironic’: Fox News Anchor Points Out Inconsistencies in Trump’s Statements on Iran War

Fox News anchor John Roberts highlighted what he called the “kind of ironic” nature of President Donald Trump’s latest comments on the war in Iran on Wednesday, noting they appeared to conflict with assurances the president had made only weeks earlier.

Fox News guest, retired Lt. General Keith Kellogg, sparked the conversation by remarking that after opening the Strait of Hormuz, “the second deal” the U.S. must nail down will focus on nuclear capabilities, calling that future agreement “the most important one.”

On whether he believes Iran will follow through, Kellogg added, “I don’t buy it… I just want to get back to the original purpose, which is not letting them have enriched uranium and getting to a nuclear weapon.”

“Yeah, I mean, it’s kind of ironic that President Trump said the other day that, you know, we’re gonna do the Strait of Hormuz first, then we’ll talk about nuclear,” Roberts pointed out, “where as weeks ago, when the MOU [memorandum of understanding] was first released, the president was telling us that they already had a deal on nuclear.”

Kellogg shook his head in agreement.

Late on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could come “tomorrow or the next day,” promising that “a lot of progress has been made.”

In further discussing the talks, the president also told Fox News’ Trace Gallagher Tuesday night that the nuclear deal has not yet been finalized. “Iran, as an example, will never have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “They already can’t; it’s going to be formal.”

Wednesday’s comments weren’t the first critical ones from Roberts in recent days. On Tuesday, he observed that Trump’s negotiations in Iran appeared to be “back to square one.” In June, while reviewing details of the initial MOU, Roberts questioned portions of the deal he called “unclear.”
