J.D. Vance Denies Attending Trump’s Trial to Boost VP Odds, Hits Back at ‘Idiotic’ Morning Joe: ‘I Was There to Support a Friend’

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) denied having traveled to Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York to increase his chances of being tapped as Trump’s vice presidential running mate.

Vance was in Manhattan on Monday where he railed against the 34 felony counts of falsifying business records against Trump, who has pleaded not guilty.

“What’s going on inside that courtroom is a threat to American democracy, ladies and gentlemen,” the senator said outside the courthouse.

On Tuesday, Vance appeared on The Story on Fox News, where host Martha MacCallum noted he is reportedly on Trump’s veep shortlist. MacCallum asked Vance about speculation he went to New York because he wants to be Trump’s running mate.

“Not at all, Martha,” the senator replied. “I was there to support a friend. Aside from the political implications of this trial – and we’ll certainly get to that – I think this is a very depressing way to spend five, six weeks of your life when you know that you’re innocent. And Donald Trump knows that he is.”

MacCallum then aired a clip of Morning Joe on MSNBC in which co-host Willie Geist criticized the senator.

“J.D. Vance is a United States Marine for God’s sake, where it’s all about honor,” Geist said. “And you just watch them [be] performatively outraged on behalf of the man who — I guess they want to be the vice president or close the power or something, It’s very sad.”

“What would you say to them about that charge?” MacCallum asked Vance.

“I think that these guys live in their own bubble where people who disagree with them disagree with them for some nefarious reason and not because they actually think that Joe Scarborough and his whole host of guests are idiotic. And that’s really what’s going on here, Martha. I actually think these cases are bogus.”

Trump is also under indictment in three other jurisdictions. In all, the former president has pleaded not guilty to 88 counts on four indictments.

On Tuesday, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen resumed his testimony to be cross-examined.
