Maggie Haberman Says Trump ‘Is Struggling’ After Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
CNN commentator Maggie Haberman said President Donald Trump is having a difficult time processing the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. On Friday, police arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the killing.
Haberman joined Friday’s edition of The Source, where host Kaitlan Collins asked about the manner in which Trump has handled questions about the murder.
“I think it depends on when somebody catches him as to exactly what he is going to say,” Haberman replied. “So many people around President Trump are very close to Charlie Kirk. President Trump was very close to Charlie Kirk. And President Trump faced two assassination attempts, one near miss last year. And so all of that is a lot of the context for how people in the White House and the president are responding to this. I think that he is struggling with this in terms of how to deal with this.”
Haberman went on to say that Trump is “never going to be the person who is going to be sort of the clearest talker about this. I don’t think you’re ever gonna hear him say something like what Utah Governor [Spencer] Cox said. I think that he is saying what he thinks, and he is who he is. And I think that people knew that before they voted for him.”
On Thursday, a reporter asked Trump outside the White House how he was holding up after Kirk’s killing.
“I think very good,” the president replied. “And by the way, right there, you see all the trucks? They’ve just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they’ve been trying to get, as you know, for about 150 years. And it’s gonna be a beauty.”
