That Time Shep Smith Brutally Mocked Cable News Solar Eclipse Hype Back in 2017

With apologies to Simon & Garfunkel….”Where have you gone, Shep Smith…Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you…”

Yes, there is a rare solar eclipse traveling across much of the nation today. And, yes, it’s a pretty cool event that shows the cosmic dance of interstellar masses. But also? The cable news outlets are taking their coverage to such an extreme level of hype and goofiness that the cynics among us cannot help but think that maybe we should tone it down just a bit.

If this is you, then you might also get great joy from Fox News’ former dayside anchor Shepard Smith, who also conveyed great cynicism about the last solar eclipse we experienced and cable news hyped in 2017, but in his signature charming and entertaining manner that pleased cynics and earnest solar eclipse fans alike.

It was August 21, 2017, when we last saw an event like this, as well as the over-the-top play for cable news ratings by programmers who still haven’t apparently learned that eclipse enthusiasts are going to be outside during the eclipse and that if you aren’t an eclipse enthusiast, your enthusiasm for watching solar eclipse coverage is also probably pretty thin.

This was the leitmotif of much of Smith’s not-so-tongue-in-cheek and mocking coverage back in the day, a montage of which was recently shared on X by Alec Sears.

Oh, how we miss the dulcet tones of Smith’s sardonic and erudite observations on Fox News.
