‘They Are Confused!’ Most Americans Believe Trump Has No ‘Clear Plan’ For Tariffs, Harry Enten Reports

CNN’s Harry Enten on Tuesday explained how new polling data revealed that most Americans believe President Donald Trump has no “clear plan” with his tariffs.

Since Trump’s “Liberation Day” when he announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs with U.S. trade partners, many Americans — and even the stock market — have been left confused by the president’s actual plan. Although Trump and his cabinet have maintained that the goal is to encourage companies to bring their manufacturing operations to the U.S.; but the president has repeatedly paused, reinstated, raised, and decreased (kind of) tariffs with a number of countries.

According to the latest data collected from various polls, Americans appear to be losing faith in Trump’s plan. Enten added:

The voters, they are confused too. Trump: a clear plan for tariffs and trade — the majority answer here is no. No, Donald Trump does not have a clear plan for tariffs and trades. This is the one thing that perturbs voters and the markets more than anything else. It’s not whether or not you put tariffs on or not. It’s whether you’re going to actually do it and stick to your guns. The American public does not believe that Donald Trump sticks to his guns. Fifty-five percent say no, he does not have a clear plan for trades and tariffs; and I will note, of course, the center of the electorate — the all-important independent vote — 64% of independents say no, Donald Trump does not have a clear plan for trade and tariffs.

“And I will note that this ‘no’ number has been creeping up, according to CBS News/YouGov. So, as Donald Trump’s presidency goes on, the American people think he’s becoming less clear over time.”

Enten also cited a metric known as the Trade Policy Uncertainty Index, which showed a staggering 846% increase in public uncertainty compared to the same time last year.

“We just are consistently breaking records this year,” Enten continued, “whereby it seems the further along we go, the more uncertainty there is in terms of the trade policy in this country.”
