WATCH: Member of Savannah Banana’s Baseball Team Completely Botches Backflip Attempt Live on CNN

A player from the exhibition baseball team the Savannah Bananas had a brutal fall on an attempted backflip on CNN on Thursday.

Founded in 2016, the Bananas play “banana ball” — a variation of baseball. Similar to the Harlem Globetrotters exhibitions, banana ball games prioritize showmanship. This includes impromptu dances from the players and fielders frequently showboating while making plays. The games have recently become popular family-friendly events, with the Savannah Bananas regularly selling out stadiums.

On Thursday, Bananas player Robert Anthony Cruz was at CNN’s studio to promote an upcoming game. At the start of the segment, Cruz was on screen by himself as he began preparing to backflip.

“Oh, Jesus,” said anchor Kate Bolduan off-screen.

A split-second later, Cruz was unable to get his legs completely under him to land the backflip. Instead, he crashed face-first into the crowd with a loud thud.

When Cruz sat up, he took at to a group of people off-screen and said, “That never happens,” with a smile. Laughter could be heard in the studio.

When the broadcast switched a shot of Bolduan and co-anchor John Berman, Bolduan had her hands over her mouth as she continued to process what she just saw a few feet away. Berman, to his credit, kept the segment going as if nothing happened.

“That, what you saw there,” he began, “is a brand new twist on America’s favorite pastime; and you can see why it is taking the country by storm.”
