New Poll: 7 Out of 10 New York Voters Want Andrew Cuomo to Resign Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

New Yorkers are increasingly in favor of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) stepping down, with a new poll finding that seven out of 10 voters in the state want him to resign.
The Quinnipiac University poll, conducted on Aug. 4 and 5, came in the wake of Attorney General Letitia James releasing a 165-page report that concluded Cuomo “sexually harassed a number of current and former New York State employees by, among other things, engaging in unwelcome and nonconsensual touching, as well as making numerous offensive comments of a suggestive and sexual nature that created a hostile work environment for women.”
Investigators interviewed 179 people, including Cuomo, and ultimately found the allegations brought forth by 11 different women were credible.
The survey also showed that the majority of New York voters (55%) believe Cuomo should be charged with a crime based on the allegations, while 29% did not. The other 16% did not offer an opinion.
Those surveyed largely agreed 70-27% that the governor has “lost his ability to be an effective leader.”
The Quinnipiac poll found support for Cuomo’s resignation to be across the board, but unsurprisingly, Republicans are leading the charge.
Republicans favored resignation 88-11%, Independents 76-19%, while Democrats had a smaller margin of 57-36%.
The poll, released Friday, represents a marked shift in opinion as the allegations have become substantiated.
In a similar poll from March, only 43% of the voters surveyed said Cuomo should resign. It also marks an uptick from a Marist poll conducted on Aug. 3 that found 59% of New York voters should resign.
Cuomo denied the report’s findings, saying Tuesday that he “never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances.” He now faces a criminal complaint filed by a woman who accused him of groping her.
An Associated Press count from Wednesday found 86 of the 150-member state assembly would oust Cuomo if he does not resign on his own.
