Trump Slams Abrego Garcia As ‘Unbelievably Bad’ Day After Saying We ‘Have to Find Out What the Truth Is’ About Him
President Donald Trump said Kilmar Abrego Garcia was “unbelievably bad” a day after suggesting he didn’t know the truth of his case.
Abrego Garcia — a Salvadoran national — had been living in Maryland with his wife and children for a number of years. In March, he was taken by immigration services and eventually flown to El Salvador’s notorious prison CECOT. Although the Trump administration maintains Abrego Garcia is a member of the gang MS-13, his legal team has denied the allegation and argued that adequate evidence has not been provided to prove it. The administration has even admitted that his deportation was done in error.
When asked about Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s trip to El Salvador to visit Abrego Garcia, Trump said:
Look, he’s a fake. I know him. I know them all. They’re all fake and they have no interest in that prisoner. That prisoner’s record is unbelievably bad. If you would go into the room, you might — if you would, [Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt] — maybe go into the room and see if you can find that little slip. I wrote some things down. I don’t know why you’d want to keep him… We got a little biography of him. Not a very innocent guy.
Just a day prior, however, Trump attempted to distance himself from the case when he claimed he was “not involved in it” and that “we’ll have to find out what the truth is.”
Trump saying Abrego Garcia’s record is “unbelievably bad” was also at odds with the findings from his own administration. On Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi published a police report on Abrego Garcia. The report was from a 2019 arrest when a single police informant claimed he was a member of the gang. On the fifth page of the report, police confirmed Abrego Garcia had no criminal history.
