An active-duty general in the U.S. Army blasted the Department of Defense over the decision to cease recruiting efforts at a prestigious event honoring Black engineers.

Under Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the armed services have eliminated or rolled back programs and outreach deemed steeped in diversity, equity, and inclusion. On Monday, Military.com reported that the armed forces will no longer recruit at the annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards.

“In compliance with Department of Defense and Headquarters Department of the Army guidance, U.S. Army Recruiting Command will not participate in the upcoming BEYA event,” a service spokesperson told the publication. “Service members and civilians are permitted to attend this event in an unofficial/personal capacity if they choose to do so.”

One recruiter who was granted anonymity lamented the Pentagon’s decision.

“This is one of the most talent-dense events we do,” one Army recruiter told Military.com on condition of anonymity. “Our footprint there has always been significant. We need the talent.”

Meanwhile, an active-duty Army general was more blunt.

“It’s f—ing racist,” the person told Military.com. “For the Army now, it’s ‘Blacks need not apply’ and it breaks my heart.”

Hegseth took heat last week after criticizing the idea of diversity.

“I think the single dumbest phrase in military history is our diversity is our strength,” he said. “I think our strength is our unity. Our strength is our shared purpose, regardless of our background, regardless of how we grew up, regardless of our gender, regardless of our race. In this department, we will treat everyone equally. We will treat everyone with fairness. We will treat everyone with respect. And we will judge you as an individual by your merit and by your commitment to the team and the mission.”
