Actor Charlie Sheen – who over the winter holiday made news when he held a knife up to wife Brooke Mueller‘s throat and allegedly threatened to kill her – has voluntarily entered rehab today. Through a statement from a publicist, we know that Sheen will be on hiatus from his hit CBS comedy Two and a Half Men while he undergoes treatment, although what kind of facility Sheen is entering has yet to be released.
Sheen’s decision to check himself into rehab is not just a good idea for his family, but let’s be honest here, his future as well. The 43-year old actor is facing felony charges for domestic abuse, and if he can prove that he was undergoing some sort of internal crisis (drugs, alcohol, rage, etc.) and is currently getting help for it, he may be able to salvage some sort of plea bargain that does not involve jail time or any more public disgrace than he’s currently under. It’s hard not to draw a comparison to another celebrity whose recent dispute with his wife turned into a media three-ring circus, and who entered rehab to avoid the media until he was ready with his public apology.
