Candidate for U.S. Congress Greg Evers announced that he would be holding a sweepstakes to award a free AR-15 to one lucky constituent of the 1st Congressional district from Florida.
Evers announced the “Homeland Defender Giveaway” Sunday in a release that said, “With terrorist shooting incidents on the rise, the contest underscores the importance of the 2nd Amendment freedoms in defense of our our [sic] homeland.”

On July 4th, one randomly chosen resident from the 1st Congressional District who has liked and shared the Greg Evers for Congress Facebook page will be awarded the AR-15. Among the conditions for winning, entrants must be 18 years of age or older and be able to pass a background check for a firearm transfer. The “Homeland Defender” has the text of the Second Amendment engraved on it.
Evers has served in the Florida legislature for the past 14 years, the last six years as a state senator, and is currently running for the Republican nomination for his district’s seat in Congress.
The AR-15, a popular semi-automatic rifle, has been the topic of much discussion in the wake of the Orlando attack, although the rifle the attacker actually used was a Sig Sauer MCX. The Washington Post‘s Thomas Gibbons-Neff explains that “while the weapon is different, the MCX and the AR-15 share the same design purpose: providing a highly portable, customizable, easy to operate and accurate rifle for the individual who possesses it.”
