President Donald Trump has brought fallen military families into the spotlight following his false claim Monday that past Presidents including Barack Obama didn’t call the families.
A.B. Stoddard — associate editor and columnist for Real Clear Politics — is troubled by what these families have had to watch over the past 48 hours.
“I think it’s terrible for every military family and Gold Star family in this country to watch and listen to any of this,” Stoddard said. “It’s extremely upsetting and it’s offensive.”
And she went on to make it clear exactly who she blames.
“President Trump started this on Monday,” Stoddard said. She added, “He might have stumbled over his words and said the wrong thing [on Monday]. What he did today made it a lot worse. He has a terrible record on Gold Star families. He needs to spare this one group of people.”
Bret Baier did not echo Stoddard’s criticism on Trump. But he did lament having to cover the topic at all.
“All of it is horrific,” Baier said. “We have to cover it because it’s news, but it’s bad.”
