‘I Don’t Answer to You!’ CNN Debate Erupts After Guest Claims ‘Mamdani Wants to Get Rid of Prisons’

A CNN NewsNight debate over the Democratic Party’s 2026 ambitions erupted into a heated on-air confrontation over one panelist’s claim that New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani “wants to get rid of prisons” – prompting an immediate meltdown.

The fiery exchange unfolded on Monday night after host Abby Phillip warned the party risked “squander[ing]” what could otherwise be a favorable political environment ahead of the 2026 midterms, citing financial struggles and broader questions about the party’s direction.

New York Post reporter Lydia Moynihan then jumped in to argue a lack of political direction was evidenced in the Democrats’ unwillingness to distance themselves from what she described as “really extreme radical policies.”

“I think that’s maybe why they’re so reluctant to disavow some of these really extreme radical policies, like getting rid of prisons and opening the borders. Again, as we saw under Biden,” she said.

Moynihan then singled out Mamdani: “So look, Zohran Mamdani… he watched the World Cup at Rikers, he wants to get rid of prisons. He wants to abolish private property – ”

Former Democratic congressman Isaiah Martin immediately cut in: “When did he ever say he wanted to get rid of prisons? When did he ever say he wanted to get rid of prisons, Lydia?”

As Moynihan tried to justify her claim, Martin repeatedly demanded evidence, interrupting several times as the two spoke over one another.

“When did he ever say that? You just lied!” he demanded

“I did not lie! Can I speak for two seconds? I’m not here to answer to you, OK?” Moynihan shot back.

“You made the claim!” Martin returned.

“Can I speak for two seconds? This is-” Moynihan began again, but Martin wouldn’t stop: “When did he ever say he wanted to get rid of prisons?”

“That’s part of his platform,” she claimed.

“When did he ever say that?” Martin pressed: “When did he say that? You made a direct claim. When did he ever say that?”

“He’s part of the DSA,” Moynihan reasoned. “I can point you to the website after. I’m happy to show you that.”

“He never said that,” Martin fired back. “You’re happy to keep lying on air.”

Exasperated, Moynihan said: “Oh my Lord. OK, I’m happy to put you to the website.”

Phillip stepped in to clarify the dispute, asking, “Just a simple question. Has he actually said that?”

“The point is, this is the new mantle-bearer; this is why they were thrilled to embrace Graham Platner, despite the fact he had a Nazi tattoo,” Moynihan argued. “There is no energy apart from these people. And the more conventional Democrats like Chuck Schumer are scared to stand up and call out any of these radical extremist policies.”

Meanwhile, other panelists continued to dispute the claims of prison abolition, and as Moynihan finished her point, Martin could be heard saying, “Outright lies.”
