Georgian Delegation Marches, Somber, In Olympics Opening Ceremonies

 

In a night of celebration and excitement for the entire global Olympic committee, a moment of such sadness as the Georgian delegation came out in place during the Opening Ceremonies, a team that arrived in Vancouver with eight athletes, and marched with only seven, after losing luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, who tragically died in a training run just a few hours before Opening Ceremonies commenced.

As the athletes came out — after not even being certain if they would compete — the mood in the crowd changed noticeably from celebratory to somber, and the crowd rose to its feet in honor of the fallen athlete. Wearing black armbands for their teammate, the Georgians marched, behind a flag rimmed with one black band. Heartbreaking, actually.
