Joe Lockhart: ‘Political Stunt’ of Military at Border a Warning Sign Trump is Trying to ‘Become Authoritarian’
Former White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart believes President Donald Trump‘s chatter about sending as many as 15,000 troops to the U.S. Southern border in anticipation of the migrant caravan should serve as a “warning sign.”
Appearing on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, Lockhart indicated he believes the talk about troops on the border is a signal that Trump is seeking to “become authoritarian.”
“He has singlehandedly, and with a great determination. sought to undermine every institution in this country that we depend on,” Lockhart said. “The media, the electoral system, law enforcement, justice, FBI, the intelligence community. And he has sought to do that and you have to ask the question why. If you go through the scope of history, the reason leaders do this is to take and gather power and become authoritarian. I think we have to watch this extremely closely.”
Lockhart added that he regards the idea of troops on the border as a “political stunt,” and nothing more.
“When we’re sending 15,000 troops to the border for a political stunt, that’s a warning sign,” Lockhart said. “And we’ve got to put these things together because before you know it, we are going to have a situation where people don’t believe anything and…he is going to self-fulfill his prophecies, ‘Only I can solve these problems.'”
