John Oliver Mocks George Soros Paid Protester Conspiracy: People Just ‘Yell at Jeff Flake’ For Free!

HBO’s Last Week Tonight host John Oliver mocked Republican politicians for pushing the conspiracy theory that liberal billionaire George Soros secretly bankrolled Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination.

This claim, which was pushed by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and President Donald Trump, was assumed by many to be a coded antisemitic slur, as white nationalists have frequently used Soros name to suggest that wealthy Jewish people are secretly dictating American politics for their own interests.

“I have heard so many people believe that [Soros is involved],” Grassley said after he was asked about the theory on Fox Business, “I tend to believe it. I believe it fits in his attack mode that he has, and how he uses his billions and billions of resources.”

Soon after the TV hit, Trump repeated the claim on his Twitter account.

Oliver mocked the theory, as Americans would “happily” protest Senator Jeff Flake without compensation:

“But you know that’s bullshit Grassley, don’t you? George Soros isn’t paying people to yell at Jeff Flake in an elevator. It’s completely unnecessary. People will happily do that for free! In fact, people would pay to yell at Jeff Flake in an elevator. If Disney World had a ride called, Yell At Jeff Flake in an Elevator, the line would be longer than Space fucking Mountain!”

After noting that millions were spent on campaigns to support Kavanaugh’s confirmation, Oliver added, “This entire process wasn’t about principle, it was just about getting what you want—no matter how you have to do it, or what damage it does.”
