Luis Gutierrez Calls Out Dem Colleagues Over Shutdown Deal: ‘They Caved, They Blinked’

Earlier today, it was announced that the Senate had come to an agreement to end the federal government shutdown. The majority of Senate Democrats voted to allow a three-week continuing resolution to come up for a vote, meaning that the short-term spending bill would pass by the end of the day. In return, the Democrats were given a pledge by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that the fate of DACA and DREAMers would be addressed in the coming weeks.

This quick settlement of the shutdown isn’t sitting well with many Democrats and liberals, especially since nothing definitive was resolved regarding DACA. Speaking to Cheddar White House correspondent — and Mediaite alum — J.D. Durkin, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) didn’t mince words.

“I think they caved. They blinked,” the Illinois lawmaker declared. “You know, most of my Democrats are very good at articulating their values and how enthusiastically they support their values. Sometimes they’re not as strong and enthusiastic at defending them in the legislative process.”

After expressing some additional disappointment in Democrats backing down so quickly in the wake of a shutdown, Gutierrez went on to highlight a point he had made over the weekend that he is willing to trade a border wall for DREAMer protections.

“I’m ready to trade bricks for lives,” he told Durkin.
