A very well-made, convincing new ad has been circulating on social media that claims the new Apple’s in iOS7 software will magically make your iPhone waterproof. And some people who tested the new “feature” and destroyed their phones are pissed.
The ad, which looks nearly identical to other promotional material put out by Apple, claims: “In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.” It also informs customers that the waterproofing is “covered by Apple’s warranty policy.”
The Independent, one of the first outlets to report the hoax, caught at least one angry (and gullible) iPhone user who fell for the joke and tweeted: “Ok whoever said IOS7 is waterproof GO FUCK YOURSELF”. TheBlaze found some similarly profane reactions:
