Orrin Hatch Joins Nikki Haley in Scolding TPUSA Kids: Don’t Just ‘Own the Libs’

On Thursday, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) told a group of high school conservatives that “owning the libs” for the sake of “owning the libs” was just not cool, at least if you wanted to keep on winning.
“If you are ‘owning the libs’ just to ‘own the libs’ your victory will be short,” Hatch told the pre-voter crowd at Turning Point USA’s High School Leadership Summit, according to video obtained by Politico.
He continued on: “It will be short-lived and your audience will remain small.”
The staunch conservative then stressed that there was a difference between leadership and stunts, something Nikki Haley said earlier in the week and he agreed with.
“Real leadership just isn’t about ‘owning the libs.’ It is about persuasion,” he told the audience, echoing to Haley’s words. “While you may get attention for stunts, you won’t necessarily inspire others to join you and join your cause.”
Hatch’s words at the TPUSA summit follow UN ambassador Haley’s similar admonishment to the conservative teens just days ago at the conference.
Haley started out by asking the teens if they ever posted something online to simply “own the libs.”
The group raised their hands and broke out into applause.
“I know that it’s fun and that it can feel good, but step back and think about what you’re accomplishing when you do this — are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading?” Haley then scolded. “We’ve all been guilty of it at some point or another, but this kind of speech isn’t leadership — it’s the exact opposite.”
The grown-ups words were also a not so subtle slap in the face to Turning Point USA’s founder and Lib Owner in Chief, Charlie Kirk, who appears frequently on Fox News and has mostly made a name for himself in young conservative circles with exactly the same form of asshattery and media stunts Haley and Hatch told the next generation that does not a winner — or a leader — make.
