An audio clip, allegedly of Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, has emerged from October 2016 in which the Wisconsin Republican can be heard saying that he was completely washing his hands of Donald Trump after the candidate’s Access Hollywood scandal.
The footage was posted by Breitbart.
“I am not going to defend Donald Trump, not now, not in the future,” said Ryan. “I’m not going to be campaigning with him for the next 30 days.”
The Speaker continued, “I’m doing what I think is best for you, the members, not what’s best for me. I’m going to focus my time on campaigning for House Republicans.”
Ryan then seemed to suggest that candidate Trump was doomed and the only viable future lay in preserving a House majority.
“It’s amazing how easily she could be beaten,” he said. “We need a check on Hillary Clinton, if Donald Trump and Mike Pence don’t win the presidency.”
“The world is well aware of this history,” Ryan’s spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement to Breitbart. “And obviously a lot has happened since then.”
