‘Pretend Patriots’: John Avlon Says George Washington Basically Warned Us About Everything
The Daily Beast’s Editor-in-Chief, John Avlon, took the stage on the Daily Show Tuesday night to plug his new book “Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations”
In a substantive interview with Trevor Noah, Avlon laid out the case and explained why he felt Washington’s parting words to the nation were a pointed warning for all of us.
Washington “decided to write about the forces he felt could destroy our democratic republic,” said Avlon noting that those forces were “hyper-partisanship, excessive debt and foreign wars.”
…(cue everyone loosening their neck collar)
“We’re playing with fire here, folks, and George Washington called it,” he said.
Avlon lauded praise on the first president for his decision to voluntarily leave office after two terms and spoke about his desire to curb the rise of political parties. “He realized that the growth of parties was perhaps inevitable, but we needed to hold them in check and we have utterly failed to do that,” he said.
According to Avlon, Washington’s prescience didn’t stop there. The 18th century president was woke on immigration, political moderation, religious pluralism, and education and attacked what he called “pretend patriots” who tried to profit of national divisions.
Good resume. I heard MSNBC is looking for a replacement for Lawrence O’Donnell — maybe this Washington guy would do well in millennial demo.
