Rep. Allen West‘s remarks about there being communists in Congress (specifically, the Progressive Caucus) have hit a nerve. Allen was slated to be the keynote speaker at an NAACP event this past Saturday, but organization elected to nix the event.
Why? In Martin County chapter president Jerry Gore‘s own words: “There’s a certain statement he made about Communists.”
“That statement alone,” Gore added. “….We do not represent that type of atmosphere.”
The statement in question is, of course, when Rep. Allen said that “I believe there’s about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party who are members of the Communist Party … It’s called the Congressional Progressive Caucus.”
The Freedom Fund Banquet was going to have the theme “Still Standing For Freedom and Equality.” West was asked to speak about his rise to fame.
Following the not-so-positive reaction to the comments, West doubled down, going further and implying President Woodrow Wilson was a communist who hid behind the label “progressive.” CNN’s Soledad O’Brien pressed him on the issue, naming members of the Progressive Caucus, asking if he considers them communists.
Th Freedom Fund Banquet is being rescheduled for Sept. 15 — with a new, to be determined, keynote speaker. Gore said West’s camp “understood” the decision.
