In her first episode back on the air following the Democratic National Convention, Samantha Bee highlighted the best elements out of the Philadelphia effort to officially nominate Hillary Clinton as the party’s nominee.
However — as many others have also pointed out — the DNC at times looked far more like something you’d historically see play out with Republicans. “TerrorCon ’16 set the bar so low for the Democrats,” the Full Frontal host said about the RNC in Cleveland, “we couldn’t wait to see how they’d trip over it.”
“The DNC proceeded to put on a USA love fest that left us feeling like we just received a blowjob by the American flag,” Bee joked, making reference to the impassioned speeches from Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, the President, and members of law enforcement with heavy pro-American sentiments.
She continued Monday night, “The party of dreamers and immigrants wanted everyone to know they welcome refugees. In particular, refugees from the Republican party, some of whom feel as homeless right now as the working poor they’ve been shafting for decades.”
When compared to the doom-and-gloom messaging that emerged from Cleveland, it’s clear that the Democrats in Philadelphia aimed for a more optimistic and dare-I-say classically Ronald Reagan tone. In fact, this was at the heart of one of President Obama‘s remarks last Wednesday. “That’s what happens when you’re the kind of citizen Teddy Roosevelt described,” he said of his own family, many of whom were classic Republicans. “Ronald Reagan called America a shining city on a hill.”
“Come on Republicans, who ya gonna’ listen to?,” asked Bee. “Agent Orange or Black Reagan?”
