In hour two of Morning Joe, the gang welcomed Senator Richard Blumenthal. The Connecticut Democrat has become such a regular on set, one wonders when he has any time for governing.
But no matter.
The good liberal was on hand to talk about First son, Donald Trump Jr.’s expected testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The hearing is closed (so no live stream here) and Trump Jr. is not expected to be under oath.
Still, Blumenthal issued a pointed warning saying it was still a “code” violation to lie to a U.S. Senator and doing so could result in “several years in prison” for the real estate heir.
“What are the penalties for Donald Trump Jr. not telling the truth? What are the rules that you all have set around his testimony?” asked Morning Joe’s Willie Geist.
“Any individual who lies to a Congressional committee is subject to penalties of 18 United States Code 1001, which punishes any individual who fails to tell the truth to a government official in this kind of circumstance,” he said. “That could be punishable by several years in prison and fines.”
The testimony is expected to address that infamous meeting Don Jr. had with a Russian lawyer — and several other people — in Trump tower… that was about adoption (but not really).
Geist’s question was not cute either, as Trump Jr. has a long history of mischaracterizing the meeting since news of it first broke in July.
