State Senator Creigh Deeds in Critical Condition After Stabbing (UPDATED)

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia State Senator and former 2009 gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) is in critical condition after being stabbed Tuesday morning, while his son Gus is dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Deeds was rushed to University of Virginia Medical Center following an incident in his home this morning. Police are still determining what happened, and no further details are known at this time.

UPDATE 1:41 p.m.: According to the Times-Dispatch, authorities now believe Gus Deeds stabbed his father multiple times before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deeds was released Monday from a mental health facility, where he had gone for an evaluation under an Emergency Custody Order, after there were no beds available to keep him overnight.

From what police have ascertained so far, Creigh Deeds was alert after the stabbing incident and able to leave his house; he contacted a relative, and was eventually flown from his family farm to a hospital.

Deeds is a prominent Virginia Democrat who was defeated by Governor Bob McDonnell is successive races for state Attorney General and Governor.
