Over the weekend, President Donald Trump was VERY busy on Twitter, as he aired grievances, called Oprah Winfrey “insecure” and at one point seemingly claimed the FBI’s focus on the Russia probe led to the horrific Florida school shooting that left 17 dead.
During a CNN panel discussion tonight, former Trump campaign staffer Jason Miller found himself in the unenvious position of defending the president’s weekend tweetstorm, which came while Trump was sitting in his private resort just minutes away from the Parkland high school where the shooting occurred. And Republican strategist Tara Setmayer wasn’t in the mood for what Miller had to say.
After conservative commentator Alice Stewart said Trump made a fine statement in the wake of the tragedy but “canceled it all away this weekend by the comments that he made” this weekend, Setmayer agreed with Stewart before asking Miller why “doesn’t the president just shut up.”
“Children were killed!” Setmayer exclaimed.
“It’s okay if the president is attacked and he can’t push back at all?” Miller responded. “So he has to just take an attack?”
Setmayer shot back that POTUS can’t just tweet out every time that he feels he’s attacked, noting that New Yorkers are supposed to be tougher than that.
“He is the most thin-skinned person,” she yelled. “He doesn’t need to defend himself all the time constantly, especially after a major national tragedy where kids died miles from his resort where he’s living in luxury.”
After Miller stated that Trump did visit with some victims, Setmayer said that it was a good thing for him to do but that POTUS should have stayed quiet while people mourned the victims. This only led to Miller complaining that Trump was being attacked “around the clock” to justify his rage-tweeting.
Setmayer then just went off:
“This, again, just highlights how unqualified he is as president of the United States. He does not have the temperament. You have to be able to take the hits if you’re going to be president of the United States, and he is unable to do it. So instead he behaves like an insecure lunatic on Twitter as opposed to being a mature adult as the president of the fricking United States. I’m sick of you guys making excuses for him.”
The Trump-defending CNN political commentator answered Setmayer by wondering aloud if “being attacked and not doing anything in response makes you a good president?”
We later got Ryan Lizza saying it looks like we are very close to Trump actually attacking the high school students that are speaking out and demanding action, causing Miller to say “that’s too far.”
