Move over, country bumpkins—the fancy folk are taking over. After debuting just a few weeks ago, CityVille has lured 54.7 million people on Facebook. Due to this unprecedented growth, Social Times reports that CityVille is set to dethrone FarmVille as Facebook’s most popular game.
So why are social-media denizens migrating from rural, agriculture-based economies to urban commercial centers? Globalization, so to speak. CityVille made a big splash when it premiered in five different languages, earning it the distinction as Zynga’s “first international launch.”
The game promises people “Monopoly meets main street,” and people are taking the bait. But if the latest U.S. Census data is any indication, CityVille may soon become GhostTown; real-life Americans are in fact moving away from established urban centers, instead trying their luck out West.
But no matter which lifestyle Facebook users prefer, there’s one clear winner: Zynga, which owns FrontierVille, FarmVille, and CityVille.
