‘Tribute or Damage Control?’: Women of The View Question Appearance of Fallen SEAL’s Wife at Speech

Today on The View, the women reflected on what it meant for Donald Trump to feature Carryn Owens during his speech last night. This display came mere hours after POTUS blamed military generals for the death of William “Ryan” Owens during a mission that Barack Obama‘s administration felt was too dangerous but which Trump signed off on.

The panelists were not happy about the display, which involved Owens opening crying and praying as Trump praised her and her late husband.

“That mission could not have happened without presidential approval which is why Obama never gave the go-ahead,” Whoopi claimed, “because he felt it wasn’t good enough to send our people in. Was this a tribute or was this damage control?”

Sunny Hostin went on to say that her cousin lost his hand and face serving in the military, so the issue is very close to her heart.

I thought that was so exploitative. I thought he exploited that widow. It was so hurtful to me. We know that U.S. military officials have said to the press that Obama didn’t give the green light because he felt that the mission would mark a significant escalation in Yemen and that President Trump, without the intel, without the appropriate ground support, approved this at dinner, not the Situation Room, and was tweeting. So when I look at that, I think, ‘My god, how do you exploit the woman who is grieving over the loss of her husband, the father of her children, when you sent him there without the appropriate ground support?’ That was wrong. That was wrong!

The studio audience erupted in cheers until Jedediah Bila started talking, making it clear that Trump should have apologized to Owens and taken responsibility for sending her husband to his death because “the buck stops” with the president.

Hostin went on to point out that though the fallen SEAL’s wife attended Trump’s speech, his father has refused to meet with Trump and is calling for an investigation into his son’s death.
