Trump Rails Against NYT Mueller Probe Scoop in Wild Tweetstorm: ‘Fake’ Report on ‘McCarthyism at its WORST!’

Flustered over a recent New York Times report that White House counsel Don McGahn is cooperating with the Russia probe, President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday morning to vent, accusing the outlet of touting falsehoods.

“The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel, he must be a John Dean type ‘RAT,'” Trump wrote, adding that he “allowed him and all others to testify” and that he didn’t need to and has “nothing to hide.”

The Times scoop, broken by Michael Schmidt and Maggie Haberman, revealed McGahn racked up 30 hours with Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigative team, discussing the inner workings of Trump’s administration, including firings within the intelligence community.

But according to Trump, the probe is nothing but a “Rigged and Disgusting Witch Hunt” that has destroyed lives, exemplifying “McCarthyism at its WORST.” That allegation may be seen as ironic by Trump’s critics who’ve likened him to the former president over his targeting of dissidents.

The president tweeted so much about the Times report that the outlet’s communications team noted it in their advertisement of the piece, defending the reporting of its two Pulitzer-winning journalists.

For Trump, it’s simply the latest in a series of verbal assaults on the media designed to undercut their credibility and shame reporters uncovering turmoil within his administration.
